MAPIT was first formed by Dr. David Reese in August of 1974 and was situated in Stockport UK. At that time MAPIT investigators only researched UFO incidents, hense its name being : Manchester's Aerial Phenomena Investigation Team. Dr.Reese ran the organisation until it was taken over by Stephen Mera in 1995.

In 1996, Stephen re-formed the organisation to incorporate the scientific study of anomalous phenomena. A much wider range of phenomena was to be investigated and researched. Subjects such as the paranormal and the supernatural. MAPIT became : Manchester's Anomalous Phenomena Investigation Team.

In January of 2000 MAPIT went under another re-formation and changed its name to : Manchester's Association of Paranormal Investigators & Training. This change was brought about due to MAPITs work with Investigation & Training Programs & Courses.

MAPIT started its training course in September of 1996 and is still currently running. The British Investigators Training Course (BITC) is the most comprehensive course of its kind in the UK.

MAPIT investigations take place throughout the United Kindom. MAPIT does not conduct many investigations of alleged haunted halls, stately homes or graveyards. MAPIT specialises in residential disturbances and corporate investigations.

In March of 1998 MAPIT launched the UPIA : Unknown Phenomena Investigation Association - MAPIT Cheshire Office which is situated in Congleton, Cheshire. UPIA is considered as a satellite organisation, and now have their own independence and association with SYPR - South Yorkshire Paranormal Research.

In 1997 MAPIT also launched SEP, The Scientific Establishment of Parapsychology. SEP only investigate parapsychological subjects and submit their findings to numerous universities. SEP collate information and document scientific findings in hope of educating the general public and the media in regards to the study of parapsychology and in hope of advancing the subject.

MAPIT is currently due to launch its Lancashire Branch LPIA : Lancashire Paranormal Investigation Association sometime in 2010.
